Pages 71- 94

What I understand

  • Emily just learned that the goblin, who is the king, the wife must be a captured wife.
  • The goblin's first wife didn't believe in goblins.
  • The Goblin King said that his house undergroud was really nice and it was beautiful.
  • The Goblins would steal the elf's brides away from them.
  • At one time the Goblins and the Elves lived peacefully.

Questions I Have

  • Why can't the Goblin King marry his own kind?
  • Was Emily still friends with Marak?
  • If not, why was Marak still adressing her by her nickname?
  • Why did the King decide that the cat would be the protector of Kate and Emily?

Unknown Words

  • Gaunt-(Pg. 73)-Bleak, desolate, or grim, as places or things.
  • Hoofbeats-(Pg. 80)- The sound made by each hoof of a hoofed animal as it moves.
  • Hewn-(Pg.82)- Felled and roughly shaped by hewing.

Literary Terms

  • Simile-(pg. 84)- "They lived just like cattle, chewing up the land and raising herds of babies.
  • Alliteration-(Pg. 90)- "Kate pushed her dress hem down to hide the knot and huddled in a furious pitch of suspense for the attack.

Summarzing Statement

  • This part of the novel explains Marak's(the King Goblin) feelings toward Kate and how he wants her to like him in order for the marriage to be successful.

What I Understands
· There was no friendship between Marak and Kate.
· Marak is supposed to be this type of goblin I guess.
· The special lunch for Mrs. Bigelow was pretty quiet for a long time.
· Kate figured out that Adele became the King’s wife which was the goblin.

Questions I Have
· Who was Marak?
· Was he really part of Kate’s family?
· How would Emily have reacted if she knew that Marak was a goblin?
· Would Kate have to marry Marak also?


Unknown Words
· Grotesque-(Pg. 49) - Odd or unnatural in shape, appearance, or character; fantastically ugly or absurd; bizarre.
· Banshee-(Pg. 53) - A spirit in the form of a wailing woman who appears to or is heard by members of a family as a sign that one of them is about to die.
· Thwarted-(Pg.64) - To prevent the occurrence, realization, or attainment of: They thwarted her plans.



Literary Terms
· Foreshadowing- (Pg.57) - “Adele did become the King’s wife. The goblin King’s wife”
· Alliteration-(Pg.66) - “It arced and danced in the trees, blinding their dazzled eyes, and a fierce wind whipped up, whirling and tearing their clothes.

Summarizing Statement
· This part of the novel is mainly about how Kate seen Marak in her dreams and she tries to figure out the past of Marak’s life and why he wanted to be with her.

What I Understand
  • Emily and Kate got lost in the forest near Hollow Hill
  • They both met some people by a bonfire.
  • Adele died so that Kate could own Hollow Hill.
  • Everybody thought that Emily and Kate were telling a lie about their adventures in Hollow Hill.
  • Mr. Marak was in Kate's room mysteriously.

Questions I Have

  • Was Agatha related to Emily or Kate?

  • Why didn't Marack not want to go inside their house?
  • Was Mr. Marak even a real person?
  • What was the "Seylin" from the bonfire doing at Kate's doorstep?

Unknown Words

  • Stoically-(Pg. 33)- impassive; characterized by a calm, austere fortitude befitting the Stoics: a stoical sufferer.
  • Ominous-(Pg. 39)-portending evil or harm; foreboding; threatening; inauspicious.
  • Mollified-(Pg.42)- to soften in feeling or temper, as a person; pacify; appease.

  • This part of the novel is mainly talking about how Kate and Emily describe their time with Mr. Marak.

What I Understand
  • The stars make Kate feel safe.
  • Kate and Emily are sisters who live with their aunt because their parents died.
  • The girls got a new guardian who's name was Hugh Roberts.
  • the girls went out the forest near Hollow Hill but got lost.
  • Kate started to have nightmares, feeling like something was constantly watching her.

Questions I have

  • Was there something looking at Kate in the forest?
  • Who was really there in the forest?
  • What dangers would Kate face later on based on the old lady's reading of her palm?
  • When is Kate going to tell Emily that there are not really related?
